Human Resources Job Descriptions

Human Resources departments are in place to look after both employees and employers within an organisation. Typically, HR takes responsibility for recruitment, pay, redundancy, working practices and conditions of employment.
Those working in HR must make sure that their organisation hires a good balance of staff with regards to experience and skills. Once this is done, they must then ensure that training and development are taken care of.
Human Resources Officer
In this role, you will need to work with the organisation’s objectives within their business and create strategies that ensure staffing meets these needs. Activities expected include:
- Working with different departments and their line managers to help them to understand procedures and policies.
- Helping to promote diversity and equality in the company
- Working with different organisations that specialise in race relations, gender, disability, age, religion and health and safety
- Recruitment activities including: writing job descriptions, placing adverts, checking application forms, interviewing and selecting
- Creating and implementing policies to do with work conditions, disciplinary procedures, equal opportunities, and others
- Giving advice on pay, promotions and benefits
- Carrying out salary reviews
- Negotiating with staff regarding pay
- Giving advice on employment laws
- Listening to problems of staff
- Planning training for staff
Most human resources job descriptions will entail some or all of the above duties. Each company will vary though depending on the sector and the size of the organisation.
Entry
There are a number of different routes into Human Resources jobs. Usually any degree will allow entry, however preference tends to be given to those that have relevant qualifications such as Business Studies, Human Resources Management, Business with Languages, Psychology and Social Administration. There are also graduate training schemes in place to assist placement, as competition in HR is high.
Salary
Depending on the company, HR jobs can be paid quite highly. This is due to the great responsibilities and the need to travel around the country to all departments/branches of a company. Starting wages can range between £25,000 and £37,000. Senior positions can earn up to £80,000 after around 10 years of service.
