Bristol has developed into an exciting modern city, rich in history, and is consistently rated as one of the best places to live and work in the UK. With great architecture, breathtaking views, a host of attractions and a variety of places to eat and drink, Bristol city welcomes over 9 million visitors every year. A vibrant, cosmopolitan city with excellent transport links, fantastic residential areas and well-regarded schools. Bristol is the 8th largest city in England and the economic capital of the South West.

Socialising / Eating / Shopping

Walk along the waterfront, make your way around the Bristol city streets and you will find endless bars, restaurants and shops. As a major UK capital you can expect the big name retailers, along with quirky outlets catering for every taste.

Shopping haunts include Broadmead, The Mall, Cabot Circus and on the outskirts of Bristol, The Mall at Cribbs Causeway is a convenient shopping complex with over 135 stores. For something less mainstream Bristol's West End, Whiteladies Road, Park Street, Colston Street, Perry Row, and Clifton Village are un-missable. There is an excellent market with interesting stalls including Beast Clothing's popular Bristolian t-shirts with slogans such as 'gert lush' and 'alright my luvver'.

The Bristol Balloon Fiesta is an amazing spectacle and considered by many as the City's top rated event. This year (2008) the event celebrates its 30th Anniversary.

Entertainment / Sights

If it is museums you are after then Bristol doesn't disappoint, from the British Empire and Commonwealth Museum to Brunel's ss Great Britain on the docks (voted UK Museum of the Year 2006). As the creative hotspot of the South West, Bristol is home to galleries with ever-changing art exhibitions and media centres. Watershed, Britain's first dedicated media centre, is a hub for the creative industries - enjoy films, events and digital media there.

There are many beautiful parks and gardens, proportionately more than any other UK city, and a visit to the Downs with views over the Avon Gorge is a must. A unique 5-acre green space in the city is the University of Bristol's Botanic Garden housing some 4,500 plant species. Other recommended places to visit include Bristol Zoo, Blaise Castle Estate and Berkeley Castle. Of course there is Bristol Cathedral to admire and the Brunel suspension bridge to visit.

Bristol Music Scene & famous connections

The music scene in Bristol reflects the multicultural nature of the city's population. Elements of reggae, dub, hip-hop and indie combine to create a sound that is uniquely 'Bristolian'. The holy trinity of trip-hop all have their roots in Bristol. Massive Attack, Tricky and Portishead placed Bristol firmly on the music map in the mid 90's. The current music scene has some of the leading lights in the dubstep movement, with artists like Skulldisco and Shackleton as well as the dark folk of Gravenhurst and the electro of Minotaur Shock.

Hollywood actor Cary Grant was born in the city, comedian Justin Lee Collins is a local and famous graffiti artist Banksy originates from here. Graduates from Bristol University include Derren Brown, Simon Pegg, Matt Lucas and David Walliams.

Aardman Animations, producers of Shaun the Sheep and Wallace and Gromit, have their headquarters are in Bristol.
