Overview

Liverpool City is rich in history and variety. There is something for all to enjoy, whether it is art, architecture, museums, shopping or football. It is currently taking centre stage as the European Capital of Culture (2008). It is home to The Tate Gallery and is world famous as the birthplace of The Beatles.

Liverpool has the biggest single collection (2500) of Grade One listed buildings and 250 public monuments - more than any other city outside London.

Living in Liverpool

From Georgian terraces in the Hope and Canning areas of the City Centre to studio flats, apartments and converted Victorian warehouses there is plenty of housing to choose from. According to Liverpool City Council demand is strong for large, luxury 2-3 bed-roomed homes and some penthouse flats were sold in 2006 for up to £1million.

Liverpool has excellent transport links and is well served by public transport. The 'John Lennon Airport' in Liverpool is Europe's fastest-growing regional airport.

Entertainment, Shopping & Sights

Liverpool attractions greet you on every street. The architecture is world-class, it boasts two cathedrals and many national museums and theatres. The heart of the city and its waterfront are considered as a world heritage site, alongside the pyramids and northern lights!

As for shopping, it has been said that "Liverpool is the kind of place where styles tend to make their first appearances before filtering through to the rest of the country." Like most cities you will be able to shop till you drop and with the imminent Liverpool One's grand opening you will not be able to resist spending that hard-earned cash. This shopping and leisure complex, the size of 28 football pitches will not only include 160 shops, cafes and restaurants but also a 14 screen cinema, stylish apartments and two new hotels. This will only enhance Liverpool's current thriving social scene.

Music, Socialising & Eating

The Beatles and Liverpool go together like Lennon and McCartney. We could not write this guide without a mention of the famous four who made such an impact in the 60s and their influence on pop culture is still evident today. If you are a Beatles fan then you should head straight to the 'Beatles Story' on the Albert Dock. Sir Paul McCartney's Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA) opened in 1996. Also with roots in Liverpool are Gerry & the Pacemakers, Atomic Kitten, Frankie Goes to Hollywood and Echo and the Bunnymen.

In terms of eating out there is something for everyone's tastebuds with enticing cusines from across the world. The guardian recommend several key places to eat in Liverpool including Yuet Ben (Liverpool's first and original Peking-style restaurant) and the Newz Brasserie; "mix with celebs and beautiful people in the new art deco surroundings of this eat-drink-and-be noticed brasserie" . Young Lawyers are likely to be seen hanging out at Revolution and the Vue Bar & Grill.
