Overview

There is more to Nottingham than Robin Hood! As one of the top 10 places to live in the UK (The Independent, 2006) and one of the top five UK shopping destinations, you will not be short of anything to do. Is Robin Hood the only famous person associated with Nottingham? Of course not, DH Lawrence, Lord Bryron, Ice Dancers Christopher Dean and Jane Torvill, Brian Clough and Nottingham's most famous contemporary author, Alan Sillitoe. They are the fastest-growing city in the UK, with the youngest population. Home to the worlds oldest professional football club, Notts County formed in 1862, and also the smallest city to produce a European cup/champions league winning side in Nottingham Forest.

Socialising / Eating / Shopping

The city has risen to prominence with its expanding nightlife, retail quarters and burgeoning arts scene. It is the East Midlands capital for nightlife and has more clubs & bars than any other city of its size in Europe. When you visit this top shopping destination The Market Square, Victoria and Broadmarsh Shopping Centres, and Bridlesmith Gate and Low Pavement are not to be missed. Nottingham-born Fashion mogul Sir Paul Smith opened his first ever shop in the city.

Lace Market, surrounding by stunning Georgian architecture and Mansfield Road both have some excellent restaurants and bars to tantalise your taste buds. Sneinton Market where you can pick up everything from the freshest, tastiest fruit and veg to beautiful handmade gifts and funky clothes. The market is a favourite with the local residents, students and trendy city-dwellers alike. Located next to the National Ice Centre, the market is held every Saturday and Monday.

Entertainment / Sights

Nottingham is renowned for the variety and scope of its thriving arts scene with something for everyone's tastes; world-class theatre, contemporary dance shows or modern art. The Centre for Contemporary Art Nottingham (CCAN) is due to open in 2008, set to be one of Britain's most exciting art galleries. In the meantime there are plenty of other art exhibitions to whet your whistle.

Nottingham has an abundance (estimated at around 200) of caves, none of which are natural and some originate back to the Anglo Saxon times and are a limestone labyrinth well worth exploring. You should visit home to Lord Byron, Newstead Abbey. Nottingham Castle offers a glimpse at the part the county has played in the culture and history of the UK - from its associations with the legend of Robin Hood to the start of the Civil War.

Living in Nottingham

Nottingham railway station is on the Midland Mainline with direct services to and from Leicester, Derby and London. Nottingham Trent University is one of the biggest universities in Britain.
