Job Description

My client, a medium sized UK Law Firm has enjoyed unprecedented growth over the last few years and is now looking to employ their first dedicated HR Manager to provide a proactive generalist HR service to the Firm, through positive HR policies and practices to maintain staff retention, morale, productivity, profitability, employee personal development and job satisfaction and to apply best practice and observe CIPD code of professional conduct.

Your main areas of responsibilities will be for all three offices in London, Bristol and Dublin;

People planning/Resourcing

- Prepare a people plan for the financial year based on the objectives set down in the Firm’s business plan.
- Report on staff turnover giving reasons for turnover and if necessary make recommendations to improve.
- Make recommendations regarding the creative and most effective use of resources.
- Make recommendations to improve/change working practices.

Recruitment

- Set up and manage professional and support staff recruitment programmes.
- Assist the Training Principal with trainee recruitment.
- Liaise with EXCO to determine recruitment requirements as detailed in the people plan.
- Formulate job descriptions and personal specifications with the staff partner/departmental managers.
- Research the most effective recruitment method for any vacancies.
- Develop relationships with recruitment agencies and search consultants.
Draft all recruitment adverts.
- Deal with any CVs; discuss suitable candidates with the staff partner/departmental manager.
- Conduct all first interviews with the staff partner or departmental manager and arrange second interviews.
- Send out rejection letters and offer letters.
- Take up references.
- Undertake financial and identity checks.
- Make recommendations to improve the recruitment and selection process.
- Issue Terms and other documentation for all staff and handle the induction process.
- Conduct all exit interviews

Trainee Solicitors

- Manage the performance and career development of all trainee solicitors from their Legal Practice Course to qualification as a solicitor.
- Review the trainees’ individual performances in six-monthly reviews and developing performance standards and working to ensure that these are achieved by all.
- Be the key point of contact for any issues relating to trainee solicitors both internally and externally.
- Appoint and monitoring external training organisations for required training courses.
- Oversee all trainee seat rotations twice a year, taking into account both the business requirements and each trainee’s career plan.
- Responsible for all aspects of secondments to Clients’ offices.

Employee relations

- Develop a positive employee relations policy.
- Discuss policies, procedures and benefits with members of staff and deal with any contractual problems or queries.
- Conduct and or accompany the staff partner at disciplinary and grievance meetings.
- Monitor attendance and sickness records and deal with potential problems.
- Advise and arrange for employees to visit an occupational health professional where appropriate.
- Conduct return to work interviews.
- Deal with maternity, paternity and adoption leave.
- Deal with applications for flexible working.

Employee benefits

- Deal with all enquiries on compensation and benefits.
- Research salary information for annual reviews (inflationary and merit-based) for EXCO.
- Review the benefits package and make recommendations.

Employment law

- Keep abreast of employment legislation and changes and formulate policies.
- Prepare training sessions and advise partners and departmental managers on policies and procedures and best practice.
- Apply the law in a practical way in dealing with members of staff.
- Complete quarterly updates to the staff handbook

Training and development

- Take full responsibility for professional and support staff skills training, career and management development.
- Plan and run the skills training programmes for professional and support staff including managing continuous professional development (CPD).
- Monitor progress of new employees at regular intervals. During probationary period, liaise with the staff partner or departmental manager regarding progress and training. Manage interim and end of probation reviews. Take action and make recommendations where appropriate.
- Identify training needs and make recommendations.
- Advise on and co-ordinate appraisal systems.
- Make recommendations to improve or develop appraisal systems.
- Undertake appraisals.

You will be an experienced legal HR professional, CIPD qualified with previous time spent in a decision-making role.
