Hudson are delighted to be partnering with Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service (BFRS) to recruit a Head of Human Resources & Organisational Development.

Operating from 20 strategically-placed fire stations and covering an area that stretches from the outskirts of London to the South Midlands, the organisation serves a population of about 800,000 people, and is committed to working hard to continue to build a deserved reputation for providing a high quality, value for money service to its community.

The Head of Human Resources & Organisational Development provides a key role in the strategic leadership of BFRS, setting the direction and operationally leading the professional HR and Organisation Development (OD) functions. The successful candidate will be required to ensure the delivery of high quality, effective and efficient value enhancing people services.

The organisation sees this as a critical role, helping optimise staff contribution and well-being, enabling them to maintain and enhance its reputation. It is looking for a progressive, dynamic, innovative and customer focused HR professional, who will head up a team of dedicated practitioners and successfully lead them in the delivery of results.

Reporting to the Director of People & Organisational Development, you will have a wide ranging brief, although the overarching priorities will be to:

  • Adapt, refresh and increase the diversity of the workforce to ensure the continued successful achievement of effective service delivery
  • Ensure the employment proposition is flexible enough to attract and retain the right calibre of people; optimising employee motivation, engagement and performance  
  • Ensure the utmost well-being of our people
  • Where appropriate, introduce flexible, affordable and local terms and conditions, able to support risk and demand led people resourcing
  • Build on talent management strategies which support the aim of having a highly skilled and professional workforce

Desired experience and requirements

  • You will be a FCIPD or equivalent qualified HR generalist with a proven track record, ideally gained within  complex, multi-site, unionised and commercially focused business.
  • You should have experience of designing and implementing modern, fit for purpose management and employment policies and procedures which support culture change.
  • You will have experience of leading and developing an HR function, partnering with senior leadership teams and managing a wide range of HR activities including; reward, resourcing, performance management, learning and development, organisation design and employee relations.
  • You should have a proven track record as a demanding leader, but one who colleagues can relate to and support.
  • You will be required to have instant impact, be visible within the organisation and be able to provide pragmatic and practical HR solutions through your team.
  • You will be capable of quickly developing trusted relationships with key senior leaders and championing the value of effective progressive HR practices to the organisation.
