Salary: Band 7, £32,547 - £36,613 pa, with the opportunity to progress to £39,993 pa

The HR department plays a key role in supporting the University’s strategic aims and in the University achieving its mission to be ‘an outstanding university at which to be a member of staff’. 

Overview of post:

As HR Manager (HR Operations), you will lead and manage the HR Operations team and provide a high quality, responsive HR service to staff and managers. You will offer guidance to managers on a wide range of issues relating to contracts and terms and conditions of employment, ensuring policies and procedures are applied fairly and consistently, as well as play an active role in the development of a new HR/Payroll system.

Key duties:

  •           Guide and advise managers on procedural and legal aspects of contracts and terms and conditions of employment, working closely with the HR Business Partners when appropriate.  
  •          Manage, coach and support the HR Administrators (HR Operations), helping to develop skills and knowledge across the team.
  •           Play a key role in the implementation and development of the HR/Payroll system, identifying process improvement and driving efficiencies.
  •           Oversee, record, collate and monitor accurate HR information, complying with relevant legislation and best practice.
  •           Be responsible for the accurate and timely compilation and submission of statutory returns in relation to HESA, FOI and other audits as required.
  •           Play a pro-active role in developing the HR Operations service and its role in the department, and lead on key HR projects as directed by the Deputy Director of HR.

Person Specification:

  • CIPD qualified (Level 7) with at least 2 years’ experience of a HR role in a large organisation.
  • Experience of working with a wide range of employment contracts and terms and conditions of employment
  • Experience of managing a HR function or team and coaching others.
  • A good understanding of HR/Payroll system processes and the use of HR reporting tools.
  • Competence in ICT and the ability to accurately enter and manipulate data.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to prioritise and plan in the short and long term. 

Although previous experience in the higher education sector is desirable and not a pre-requisite, s/he must be able to demonstrate commitment to the values of higher education.
